Steffi Graf - Rivalry with Sanchez-Vicario
It is all here. The end of the first set pretty much encapsulates the rivalry. The tug of war that was any match between these two. When Steffi hesitated, Sanchez pounced. When Sanchez drew even, Steffi would come up with one or two brilliant shots. Along the way, the impossible rallies became a test of will and stamina, with each challenging the other's court positioning with all sorts of angles and short slices. It is a brilliant display of clay court tennis, nothing at all like the charades the women play on clay today.
More than any other player, except perhaps for Martina Navratilova, Sanchez brought out the best in Steffi, particularly from 95 to 96. Because Sanchez was so good at neutralizing Steffi's forehand and serve, Steffi had to construct points with other shots --- drop shots, short slices, volleys, lobs, and the topspin backhand. As a result, their matches from 95 to 96 are filled with some of the most brilliant shotmaking Steffi ever demonstrated.

Steffi Graf Serve Dropshot Combination (Clay)
Переглядів 13 тис.11 років тому
Beginning in 1995 and continuing to the end of her career, Steffi began utilizing the drop shot to challenge the court positioning and shot selection of her opponent. Some of the better known shot combinations include the drop shot-forehand passing shot, drop shot-chip lob. and drop shot-volley. Here she combines a serve out wide (to the Ad side) with a drop shot to the Deuce side. Quite a styl...
Steffi Graf Backhand Slice (circa 1995)
Переглядів 12 тис.11 років тому
When Steffi returned from her back injury which sidelined her from the end of the 1994 US Open to the end of the 1995 Australian Open, it quickly became apparent that she had made certain adjustments to her game. Free of back pain, her serve was better than ever, with more kick and more of a commitment on her part to hit aces. The biggest strategic change, however, was to the way she used her s...
Steffi Graf Forehand Swinging Volley
Переглядів 4,1 тис.11 років тому
Steffi is old school, meaning she preferred to hit a conventional forehand volley. This is one of the rare instances when Steffi hit a swinging volley. As with every other shot, Steffi makes the shot look more graceful than it is by design. At the hand of almost every other female tennis player, it can be quite an ugly shot. Paris 1995.
Steffi Graf Forehand (Olympics 88)
Переглядів 37 тис.11 років тому
In 1988, Steffi's forehand was in top form. Here it is at the Olympics. There still isn't a shot in the women's game that is this great and this spectacular. On that note, there is only one Golden Slam. A Golden Slam is the Calendar-year Grand Slam plus the Olympic Gold Medal. As of the 2012 Olympics, Steffi is still the only player man or woman to have won the Golden Slam. Olympics 1988.
Steffi Graf - Backhand (Olympics 88)
Переглядів 26 тис.11 років тому
At the 88 Olympics, Steffi changed things up a bit. On rallies and overall, she used her backhand drive more. Don't know what got into her? Perhaps she thought she had nothing to lose after completing the Calendar Grand Slam. Whatever the case, the backhand drive served her well and showed that on return of serve in particular she would have been even more dominating. Olympics 1988.

Steffi Graf - Peak Graf vs. Peak Pierce
Переглядів 32 тис.11 років тому
Too much is made by some Mary Pierce fans of Mary's win over Steffi at the 94 French Open. Out of that has grown the ridiculous legend of Peak Pierce, a player with the ability to thrash any other player, be it Steffi or Serena. In the making of that legend, what is forgotten is that Peak Pierce did not face Peak Graf at the 94 French. They did face each other at their peaks, but only later, at...

Here Steffi shows her ability to counter Serena's extreme slice serve. It is interesting to note that both of Serena's best serves, down the T on the AD court and the slice out wide on the Deuce court, go to Steffi's forehand. Based on the evidence from this match, Steffi's forehand trumps Serena's serve. (Why should this match matter more than the other two matches? Because of the higher quali...
Steffi Graf Serve (Favorite Spots c1988)
Переглядів 2,2 тис.11 років тому
This game shows pretty well what Steffi's favorite serving spots were from 88 to 89. To the Deuce court, out wide and hard to the backhand. To the Ad court, out wide or hard to the backhand. She wasn't at this time going so much right down the T. Remember she expected to finish most of her points with the forehand. So it was better for her to go hard at the returner so that she could elicit a b...
Steffi Graf - Rivalry with Hingis
Переглядів 819 тис.11 років тому
This is Hingis serving for first set of the 96 US Open. She had as many as 4 set points. She failed on each one. While she is serving for the set, there is even a point which resembles the famous point from when she served for the 99 French title. Here she also misses the backhand volley (off a topspin passing shot). That was the essence of this rivalry. While Hingis was good at battling Graf, ...

Steffi Graf - Classic Forehand Pattern (versus Serena Williams)
Переглядів 38 тис.11 років тому
This point is worth noting because of what it tells us about how timeless Steffi's forehand pattern is. It is not like Serena loses this point because she can't execute her shots or she isn't as fast/powerful as she is going to be at her peak. (She's probably already that fast/powerful.) No, Serena loses the point because Steffi's forehand pattern puts her opponents in an impossible position. A...
Steffi Graf - Forehand to Forehand (versus Serena Williams)
Переглядів 108 тис.11 років тому
Steffi wins this battle of the forehands. Take note of how capable Steffi's forehand is from all parts of the court. When drawn wide and on a stretch, she can put the ball up the line. When the ball is short, close to the net, she can put it away for a winner. On the forehand, Steffi's range is unlimited. Hong Kong 1999.
Steffi Graf Topspin Backhand (versus Serena Williams)
Переглядів 32 тис.11 років тому
There goes another falsehood, that Steffi could not hit the shot cold. This is the only one she hit in this match. Contrary to what the announcer argues, Steffi's coach (Heinz G.) never pleaded with her to hit more topspin backhands. He thought the slice backhand was the perfect strategic complement to her forehand. He said as much to Tennis Magazine in 1995. Hong Kong 1999.

If Steffi were to play today, she would completely be a different player. For one, I don't think she would be using the 85 head size she loved to use in her heyday. I think she would have to opt for a 100, which in my opinion would have changed her technique dramatically.

Wouldn't that pause at the highest point of the ball toss with the racquet already facing up have cost her some pace? Maybe the reason she couldn't go faster, which with her build she could have.

Technically yes, but the extenuating factor here is how fast Steffi can get the face of the racquet going. That helped her as much on her serve as it did on her forehand.

Pierce's tennis career was like a rollercoaster ride. I do believe between somewhere around '94 to '01 she ended the year top 10... 7 and 5 twice. She overcame a bully of a father. Despite injury jumped back to number 5 in 2015 when most of her generation had retired. Made 6 slam finals, winning 2 as well as a Wimbledon doubles final. Her county woman recently booked a place in the tennis HOF. Comparing their careers I'd still choose Pierce over Mauresmo to get in. Sabatini and Novotna (who I love BTW) made it into the HOF. Time to show Pierce the respect she deserves and induct her into the HOF.

I think your argument is flawed because this wasn't Mary at her peak. Arguably Mary had many purple patches during her career with frequent periods (sometimes years) during which she went off the boil. To say this match is Mary at her peak just isn't true. Mary's peak came during the clay court season of 2000 when she played phenomenally.

Indeed. That's so true! Every time Hingis is leading only because Graf hit a lot of errors, these are free points, Graf is taking the risk to attack, but when it comes to crucial points, Graf's strategy becomes simple, just stay in the rally and control the errors, when no free points are given, Hingis is the one who loses patience and starts to attack, but this is not her strength, Graf then waits for a chance to hit a winning shot, that's it. Well Hingis is good in rallies, but she really lacks of penetration in her shots!! Well, just saying, it's already the past, now let's just watch Serena, grrr!!!! She is full of KILLING SHOTS!!

If u see so - its your opinion. In my opinion, Serena has more Power, but Tennis is not only power. Steffi was faster, she had more various (net and court-coverage) and how she hit the ball with fore- and backhand (slice): she stepped into ball. Ideal for fast courts. Never mind: Serena, Steffi and Martina N. are the best players ever.

I do miss Steffi's grace, just unmatched. For such a klutz off the court, and I do say this with all due respect, because yeah, she was accident prone, she has such an amazing grace on the court. Don't misunderstand, I am a Grafan, and I think she is the GOAT, and the best athlete to play the game.. So I'm not saying she only has tennis ability. I remember when she used to waterski down in Florida, and surf in Oz, though wind surfing was her favorite. She was described as having "mad skills" at basketball, she skies, skates, roller and ice, apparently just took up longboard, and though she's only been snowboarding for a few years Shaun White was impressed with how good she is. Not to mention her qualifying times for the what was it 400 and 800 meters. Her times were actually fast enough for her to run in the Olympics, though, and I don't know why, it couldn't "be worked out" to allow her to run in Seoul. I don't know if she wanted to run in Barcelona, but I'm sure she was still fast enough to qualify at middle distance. A funny story from way back concerning her "accident proneness". She used to on occasion go to the racetrack at Hockenheimring, and drive race cars, including on at least one occasion a Formula One car. (Steffi actually had stated and seemed to be preparing for a career in racing after she ended her tennis career) Well the WTA found out she was doing this and expressed concerns to her about her driving race cars. They were very worried she was going to get hurt. So the story goes, they told her we don't think you should be doing this, and she said, why, I know what I'm doing. And they said, well, we know you, and you can be kinda accident prone. She assured them that when she had to concentrate, like when she was behind the wheel of a race car, she was fine, and they didn't have to worry. It's only when she didn't have to concentrate on what she was doing, then there could be a problem.

The interesting thing is she brushes the ball on contact but her takeback is higher than today's players and follow through also more 'classical' as in up over rather than across. It looks like a simpler motion compared to what is now called the ATP forehand but it is harder to hit like that because you would struggle to release your arm enough with this kind of motion. The complicated-looking ATP forehand style allows you to uncoil very effectively. Graf's is truly an unique shot and best not imitated unless you are a great athlete. That is probably why it was difficult if not next to impossible for opponents to figure out her forehand.

There are plenty of players in the modern era who use great, driven, slice backhands against Serena, but rarely find success against Serena. Handsy players like Radwanska have trouble re-establishing pace when hit a driven slice, thus, Radwanksa, re-slices, electing to have the other player regenerate the pace of the rally. However, Serena has no trouble regenerating pace or re-slicing, thus she has two options when facing a driven slice. Re-slice or regenerate pace and move to the offensive. The real problem to note is that because Serena is usually "ahead" in the point, her opoonents rarely find the oppurtunity to set up and drive a slice, their slices will usually be fluffuy, high off the ground because they are on the mild to extreme defensive side of the point. These fluffy slices, serena will pummel. Serena has seen slice and COP players before. She can handle it

+LDVTennis yeah, I still disagree. Serena lost because she got really tight lost confidence. Roberta made balls, and was really crafty but I think serena beat herself tbh. But I do agree that in that particular match, the crafty slice game was the perfect game to beat serena on that day

+LDVTennis Roberta Vinci played well vs Serena & obviously beat Serena while also stopping her from completing the calendar Grand Slam. But I think the pressure & stress of completing the Grand Slam was what beat Serena, not Vinci's slice backhand.

    • @LDVTennis
      @LDVTennis 8 років тому

+Patrick Thigpen Players don't lose matches because of lack of confidence or because they can't grunt. They lose matches because they can't execute. On a bad day, when your best shots aren't working or you are not in top physical form, you have to have a plan B and you must be willing to work. Serena has never had a Plan B or at least one that she could execute. That's what Vince (and now Kerber) was able to expose and exploit. Indeed, it is telling that as Serena gets older and loses the ability on any given day to out serve and outhit her opponent that there's not much else to her game. This was never true of Martina, Court, and Graf. Serena has always been held to a lower standard because the skill level of women's tennis is not what it used to be.

    • @stevie69ful

+Ari Onassis-Sugen What truth? I wish you Serena Haters would realize Serena Williams is a Champion just like Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert & Margaret Court. When are you haters ever going to give Serena the Respect she's earned? Serena is not perfect or a robot. Serena has now lost 5 Grand Slam Finals to 4 different finalists while winning 21 Grand Slam finals. That fact & stat alone deserves Respect. But Haters like you want to try to diminish her accomplishments because you think Serena Williams did it only with power & that's all you think she's about. Even if that's true, which it isn't. If Serena Williams is able to compete in 26 Grand Slam Finals & win 21 of those Championships with Only Power is an amazing achievement. Of course, if you, like myself, are a tennis player & know a lot about this great sport, know it takes more than just power to be successful. Speed is important. Clean & quick footwork is helpful. Excellent hand/eye coordination is necessary. Good ball placement would be nice. And if you are powerful with your control of the tennis ball & powerful with your movement around a tennis court than more power to you. But to diminish Serena Williams' accomplishments by saying she's only about power is ridiculous. God or Jehovah has blessed Serena Williams with a powerful, athletic body & mind but that's not enough for you Haters. No, she only has a Plan A game. No, she has no variation in her tennis game. No, she only has a great serve & if her serve is not working than she can't do anything else. Mind you, if anybody can't get their serve in & they can't get their serve to work then NO ONE is going to win not just Serena Williams. What is wrong with you Haters? I have to be honest. I don't like Novak Djokovic but I'm not so Sick & so Hateful towards Novak that I can't see he deserves respect & praise for his Love of Tennis. He Loves tennis & he respects his opponents so much that he has mastered his game & his opponents games. Novak, like Serena, is taking tennis to new heights. By being stronger & faster than the great players that came before them. I won't let Hatred blind me from seeing the truth. And the Truth is, Novak Djokovic & Serena Williams are stronger, faster & better than their great predecessors & even their predecessors believe they're better so why in the world would I or anybody else who loves tennis believe in anything Haters like you would have to say? Well, I don't & no one else should either because your comments are blinded by HATE not Love & definitely not by facts.
